I attended an estate sale a few days ago - thirtysomething miles away but an hour-and-a-half drive. I suppose I need to get used to this, the breathtaking traffic in the DC area. If nothing else, it slashes the number of sales I can get to in a morning. In this case it was only two. The first sale was … interesting on several counts, not the least of which was the liquidator's cavalier announcement that he had removed at least two thirds of the historic house's contents (mostly ephemera) prior to the sale. He justified this by a claim that he was preventing the family from removing any items shortly before the sale began - I guess we should've been thankful - and would instead present them at an online auction later in the month. Oh, yes, many thanks. The fact that he chose to omit this piece of information from his description of the sale seemed at best discourteous and at worst scheming. "There's plenty left in the house," he said. There was not. My purchase came to a grand total of one dollar. It paid for gas.
I'm mentioning this because today's feature article addresses the tactics that can help establish contacts, the chief thrust of which focuses on trust building. As with most anything, trust works both ways. It's one thing to present yourself as trustworthy, quite another to expect the same from somebody else. Some potential contacts just aren't worth the trouble.
A sad note: Bookseller Keith Moulton of Chagrin Watershed Books passed away suddenly last week. He was a genuinely good man and accomplished bookseller. He will be missed greatly. Keith did an article for us some time back, and those of you who knew him will see his personality shine in it:

This is a compilation of 299 pages of G&D First Editions, almost all of which are accompanied by large thumbnail images of dust jacket cover art. Who knew there were so many? A majority of titles - no surprise - are boys and girls series books, but there is no shortage of additional titles, including dozens of jazz age and depression era romance publications, surprisingly collectible, by the way. I included three examples in the last newsletter. Here are three more:
Titles are organized by year, and, when applicable, accompanied by series names and volume numbers. This, along with the dating tool kit provided in Part I, will enable users to both identify and in most cases date not only First Editions but also distinguish them from reprints - and in some cases assist in dating reprints. Dating G&D's has been an area of concern for booksellers for decades, and the approach for most has been to report the copyright date (because it was all that was available) and either leave it at that, do nothing or guess at a date window. Happily, in most cases, this will no longer be necessary.
Due to the length of Part II, it was necessary to split it into two parts, and Part III - soon to come - will consist of a comparable compilation of all known G&D photoplay editions, title lists of other collectible G&D reprint series and a detailed marketing analysis of G&D reprint high spots, and there are many.
